Cursillo

Our Cursillo group is called Bethany Ultreya. It is part of the Buffalo Diocesan Cursillo Movement and the National Cursillo Movement. Cursillo is a movement of the Catholic Church which started in Spain in the early 1940’s. It was started to help people come to know Christ better and understand what it is to be a Christian in our world today. It is a means of formation to develop effective apostles. The purpose of the Movement is to make Christian community possible in neighborhoods, parishes, work situations and other places where people live the greater part of their lives, by being Christ like in our thoughts, words, and actions. It makes it possible for anyone to live a Christian life in a natural way.

The word Cursillo means "short course" and a person’s experience begins with a 3-Day weekend experience called Cursillo de Christiandad (a short course in Christianity). The weekend experience consists of a series of talks given by a team of lay people and Clergy/Religious and group discussions following each of the talks. There are also liturgical services (Morning and Evening Prayer, Mass, the Rosary, etc.). People who attend a weekend are sponsored by a friend who has previously experienced a Cursillo 3-Day Weekend.

Following the 3-Day weekend, participants are encouraged to become a part of a small group of Cursillo friends who come together to share their growth in becoming a person who strives to bring a Christ-like attitude to our environments. This is called a Group Reunion. The Ultreya (a Spanish word that means “onward”, “keep going”) is a larger Cursillo community that brings together members of several of the small sharing groups. Both of these are a part of what we call the 4th Day, which is the rest of our lives. The Group Reunion and Ultreya are the tools that the Cursillo Movement has in place to assist members in continuing to strengthen their relationship with God, change their mentality to become more Christian and continue to bring Christ to their environments throughout their lives. It is a way to continue what was begun in them on their 3-Day Weekend.

Our Ultreya is named after the town of Bethany, especially the home of Lazarus, Martha and Mary, where Jesus went to meet with friends, share with them the wonders and struggles of His ministry and be encouraged and refreshed. This is what happens for each of us at Ultreya. (Our group has had this name for many years, prior to meeting at St. Barnabas and now St. Martha Parish. Another God- incidence!)

Bethany Ultreya usually meets twice a month, on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 7:00 – 9:30 pm. We meet in the cafeteria or room A in the school building. The Ultreya consists of prayer, group sharing, a witness by a member of Cursillo and a doctrinal talk by a Spiritual Advisor and a social.

All persons who have attended a Cursillo Weekend are welcome to join us at any Ultreya. People who are interested in learning more about the Ultreya or the Cursillo Movement and the 3-Day Weekend can contact Mary Lynn Heidle at 716-472-1469.
